This mining process extracts valuable deposits from the earth by use of machinery to dig burrows or ‘open pits’. These mines are used when the deposits are found close to the surface due to kimberlite pipes. The overburden (surface material), covering the deposit must be removed first to extract the desired mineral or gem.
